Your own cloud with NAS and backup

Files, client access, project spaces, calendars and wiki on your own hardware, with encrypted backup at a second site.

More and more companies do not want to store their data with Microsoft, Google or Dropbox, but run it themselves. Your own cloud on NAS and server offers the same features: access from anywhere, sync, client sharing, project spaces, calendars and wiki.

What matters is a professional setup. That includes a well-designed permission concept, a hardened network architecture with firewall and VPN, multi-factor sign-in and an encrypted backup at a second site with tested restores.

BARNICOM plans the environment, procures and sets up the hardware, secures everything and documents it. On request, we take over maintenance and further development. A local AI server can be connected later.

What your own cloud delivers

Your data, your hardware

All files are stored on your NAS or server. No cloud provider has access, and no contract can restrict it.

Separated by company

Several companies, projects and clients in one environment, cleanly separated through groups, folders and permissions.

Secure collaboration

Clients and partners get targeted access to individual folders or project spaces, with expiry dates and multi-factor sign-in.

Building blocks

A proven setup of European open source software and brand-name hardware. We make the exact selection in the concept phase.

AreaSolutionPurpose
Storage NAS, for example Synologycentral file storage with snapshots
Cloud interface Nextcloudaccess, sync, sharing, apps for all devices
Project spaces and wiki Nextcloud group folders, Deck and Collectives or OpenProjectKanban boards, tasks, documentation
Calendars and contacts Nextcloud Calendarshared calendars, also on smartphones
Server Proxmox VEseparate virtual machines for cloud and services
Remote access OPNsense with WireGuard and reverse proxysecure access from anywhere
Offsite backup second NAS or Proxmox Backup Server at a second siteencrypted, versioned, protected against ransomware

How the project works

  1. Concept

Requirements, permission concept, network, security and hardware are defined in a paid concept phase.

  2. Hardware and setup

Procurement, setup of NAS, server, firewall and cloud, hardening of all systems.

  3. Backup and recovery

Offsite backup location, restore test and a written disaster recovery plan.

  4. Handover and operations

Documentation, training and, on request, maintenance, updates and monitoring.

What to keep in mind

Your own cloud needs care. We tell you upfront what is involved, for example:

  • regular updates of NAS, server, firewall and cloud software
  • a stable internet connection with sufficient upload at the main site
  • power, cooling and physical security at both sites

Frequently asked questions

Is a NAS alone enough?

For plain file storage, yes. For cloud features, many users and client access, we recommend Nextcloud on a dedicated server with the NAS as storage. That is faster and more secure.

How are several companies kept separate?

Through groups, group folders and permissions in one environment, or through separate instances if strict separation is needed. We define this in the permission concept.

How does the backup protect against ransomware?

With an encrypted copy at a second site, immutable snapshots and a process in which the backup site pulls the data. An attacker in the main network cannot delete the backups that way.

Can clients exchange files without an account?

Yes, via share links with password and expiry date. For ongoing collaboration there are guest accounts with access only to the approved project spaces.

What does the switch cost?

It depends on data volume, number of users, hardware and security requirements. You receive a proposal after the assessment.
