Dockfit for macOS
Help & FAQ
Dockfit keeps every window within the visible area of its display, below the menu bar and above the Dock. The app runs in the menu bar and needs Accessibility access to move the windows of other apps.
Installation and Updates
Installing
Download Dockfit on the Dockfit page, open the file and drag Dockfit to the “Applications” folder. Dockfit is notarized by Apple and launches without a warning. On first launch, a welcome window explains the required permission.
Updates
Dockfit checks for a new version about once a day and offers to install it. To check manually, choose “Check for Updates…” in the Dockfit menu. The automatic check can be turned off in the settings.
1. Permission
Dockfit Is Missing under “Accessibility”
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, click “+” below the list, select Dockfit in the “Applications” folder and turn it on.
Turned On, but No Effect
After an update, the entry can become invalid. In that case, select Dockfit in the list, remove it with “−” and add it again with “+”. If that does not help, reset the entry in Terminal with tccutil reset Accessibility com.barnicom.dockfit and grant access again.
2. Windows Are Not Adjusted
Automatic Tidying
If the menu shows “Grant Accessibility access …”, the permission is missing. Automatic tidying starts about two seconds after a display change or after waking from sleep, and can be turned on and off in the settings under “Keep windows above the Dock”.
Windows Skipped on Purpose
Minimized windows, full-screen windows and apps on the “Excluded Apps” list are left unchanged. If an app has a minimum size larger than the available space, Dockfit at least keeps the title bar within reach.
Tidying Up Manually
You can run Dockfit at any time with “Tidy up now” in the menu or the keyboard shortcut, ⌃⌥⌘T by default. The menu shows how many windows were adjusted in the last run.
3. Settings
Excluding Apps
Open “Settings…” in the Dockfit menu, click “Add App” under “Excluded Apps” and select a running app. Dockfit leaves the windows of these apps unchanged. The button next to an entry removes the app again.
Changing the Keyboard Shortcut
In the settings, click the field next to “Tidy up now” and press the new key combination. It must include at least one of the keys ⌘, ⌥ or ⌃. You can also remove the keyboard shortcut there.
Drawing Layouts
Choose “Draw Layouts on Screen…” in the Dockfit menu. A grid appears on every display: drag on an empty spot to create an area, move areas or resize them by their handles, delete them with ⌫ and apply them with “Save”. Under Settings → Layouts you can set whether the miniature appears whenever you drag a window or only while holding ⌃, ⌥ or ⇧, and how large it is.
4. Uninstalling
Removing Dockfit
Choose “Quit Dockfit” in the menu. If “Launch at login” was turned on, turn it off in the settings first, or remove Dockfit later under System Settings → General → Login Items. Then move Dockfit from the “Applications” folder to the Trash. Optionally, remove the entry under Accessibility with “−” and delete the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.barnicom.dockfit.plist.
