Jira and Confluence Alternative
Projects, tickets, service desk and wiki with European open source software, instead of moving to Atlassian Cloud.
Atlassian discontinues its server products Jira, Jira Service Management and Confluence Data Center on March 28, 2029. Anyone who wants to keep using them must move to Atlassian Cloud, run by a company domiciled in the US since 2022.
For project management, service desk and wiki, there are mature European open source solutions such as OpenProject from Berlin, Zammad and XWiki. They run in German data centers or in your own data center.
BARNICOM plans the switch, migrates your data and runs the new environment.
Why companies are switching now
Data Center ends in 2029
Atlassian discontinues Jira, Jira Service Management and Confluence Data Center on March 28, 2029. After that, only Atlassian Cloud remains (Atlassian).
A US corporation
Atlassian moved its corporate domicile to the US in 2022 (announcement). The US CLOUD Act therefore also applies to its cloud.
Costs and dependence
In the cloud, the provider decides on prices, features and update timing. Marketplace apps often come as additional subscriptions.
What replaces what
Atlassian products and European solutions that cover them. Which combination fits is something we work out together.
| Area | Atlassian | European alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Tasks and issues | Jira Software | OpenProjectGermany |
| Agile boards and sprints | Jira Software | OpenProject boards and backlogsGermany |
| Service desk and tickets | Jira Service Management | Zammad or Odoo HelpdeskGermany, Belgium |
| Wiki and documentation | Confluence | XWiki or OpenProject wikiFrance, Germany |
| Project time tracking | Marketplace apps such as Tempo | Time tracking in OpenProjectGermany |
| Operations | Atlassian Cloud | Data centers in Germany or your own data centerGermany |
Origin refers to the vendor’s headquarters. All solutions listed are open source and can be self-hosted.
How the switch works
-
Assessment
Which projects, workflows, fields and Marketplace apps are in use? The result is a plan with effort and timeline.
-
Pilot
One team or project works with the new environment first, and workflows and fields are aligned.
-
Migration
Issues, comments, attachments and wiki pages are migrated and links checked.
-
Operations
We take care of updates, monitoring, backup and support, with a service level agreement on request.
When the alternative is not a fit
Switching does not make sense in every case. We point out limitations beforehand, for example with:
- many Marketplace apps without a counterpart
- complex workflows and automations built up over years
- tight coupling to other Atlassian products such as Bitbucket or Jira Align
Frequently asked questions
What happens to Data Center after March 28, 2029?
Atlassian ends sales, support and updates for Jira, Jira Service Management and Confluence Data Center. According to Atlassian, data will only be readable after that.
What is OpenProject?
OpenProject is open source project management software by OpenProject GmbH in Berlin. It offers tasks, Gantt charts, agile boards, time tracking and a wiki, and is part of openDesk.
Can we migrate our Jira data?
Yes. Issues, comments and attachments are migrated via exports and interfaces. We check the exact approach and open points on a test project first.
Is Bitbucket affected?
According to Atlassian, Bitbucket Data Center is not affected by the end of life. For a complete switch, self-hosted solutions such as Forgejo are an option for source code.
What does the switch cost?
It depends on the number of projects, users and Marketplace apps. You receive a proposal after the assessment.
